The Sealy Mattress Company has been in business for 125 years and is the number one maker and seller of mattresses in the United States.  The Sealy Company began as a group of companies which eventually became one company.  The largest company to be absorbed by Sealy was the Ohio Mattress Company.  Sealy is known for high quality mattresses and box springs and has subsidiaries that make water beds and other types of bedding.

Although Sealy had a long history, it was not until April 2004 that it became a publicly traded company on the NY Stock Exchange.  Sealy, like most of it’s competitors, made it’s debut as a mattress company in the latter half of the 19^th century with the advent of the inner spring mattress.  The inner spring mattress is still the most popular seller, but other mattresses are now in demand and Sealy has continued to keep up with market trends.  They are subsidiaries owned by Sealy that make water beds and other types of mattresses.  Sealy also has it’s own memory foam mattress line.

One of Sealy’s innovations came in the 1930′s when mattress sales plummeted and the company’s outlook was bleak.  They created the first mattress without buttons.  Buttons were uncomfortable to sleep on and the new inner spring mattress without buttons was an instant success.  In the 1950′s Sealy introduced it’s now signature Posturepedic line of mattresses.  In 1956, Sealy became the first mattress company to display and advertise king size mattresses and box springs.

In 1994, the company decided to expand it’s international presence and today they have manufacturing and marketing operations in Cananda, Puerto Rico, Mexico , Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy, Korea nad Uruguay.  The have 12 international licensees which operate ins Australia, Israel. Jamaica, the Cominican Republic, the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, south Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Sealy mattresses have long been known for their quality and durability.  Sealy also makes mattresses that will suit most budgets, from modest to high end.  They have been aggressive advertisers since the 1930′s and are one of the most well recognized names in bedding.  In the United States, the Sealy Posturepedic mattress is a benchmark by which other mattresses are measured.  Sealy Mattress Company also owns Stearns and Foster, a high end mattress company which once had a considerable market share on the east coast of the United States.
